FICO-911
The Ultimate Solution to ALL Derogatory Credit History
Tax Liens
How long do tax liens stay on a credit report?
Unpaid tax liens remain 15 years from the filing date. Paid tax liens remain 7 years from the "date of entry, or until the governing statute of limitations has expired, whichever is longer. This time period applies to each legal action.
What happens when I pay a tax lien? Is it removed from my report?
The tax lien will not be removed from your credit report, even if it is paid. Once paid, the tax lien will show a "Satisfied", "Released", or "Paid" status. A paid tax lien is still derogatory credit information and seriously impact your FICO score. There is no such thing as a "perfect payment history" on a tax lien. The very fact that it exists makes it derogatory information.
Can you permanently delete a tax lien?
Yes, we permanently delete paid or unpaid tax liens from your credit report. Your tax lien, however, will still remain in the records of the actual court the liens was filed through. Fortunately, lenders do not research court records when evaluating credit worthiness. They rely solely upon the information reported on your credit report.
How long will it take for you to remove my tax lien?
Average time is 10-12 business days per tax lien. See the "Timing" section on our Overview page.
